A Pakistani-born man believed to be responsible for the attempted car bomb attack in Times Square was seized from a jet yesterday seconds before it took off from New York for the Middle East, despite having been placed on a “no-fly” list hours before his arrest.

Faisal Shahzad, 30, who became a US citizen in April last year, is being charged with an act of terrorism and using a weapon of mass destruction. He was arrested at John F. Kennedy airport, New York, aboard an Emirates flight that had just pulled away from the gate, ending an extraordinary 53-hour manhunt.

The final stages of the search for Mr Shahzad, who had recently returned from five months in Pakistan, where he received training in a terrorist camp, resembled high-paced television drama. FBI and Terrorism Task Force agents rushed to the airport to apprehend him before Flight 202 to Dubai took off.

“They caught him at the last second,” one official said. Mr Shahzad had been booked to travel on to Islamabad in his native Pakistan. He had made the bookings on his way to the airport and paid cash for his tickets.

No need to worry, Faisal Shahzad was just indulging in a bit of Muslim satire. When Muslims make threats to blow things up, its simply Islamic humour and if you are actually racist enough to imagine they really mean it, then you’re  just an Islamophobe says Irfan. 500 Mad Mohammedans attack Catholic church

Dhaka (AsiaNews) – A mob of more than 500 Muslim extremists attacked Christ the Saviour Catholic Church in Boldipukur, Mithapukur Upazila (subdistrict), in Rangpur Division, some 335 kilometres from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The incident, which occurred last Sunday, was triggered by a dispute over land. According to an initial account, five indigenous tribal Christians were seriously injured. More from the RoP

…apart from killings of 10 poor Chakmas, at least 200 houses in 11 Chakma villages were burnt to ashes by marauding goons on the night of February 19. At one point during the clash, the military personnel started firing indiscriminately on fleeing Chakma villagers only to help encourage attacking Muslim settlers. Chittagong is Bangladesh’s only district having a significant Buddhist population. Army was called in after a pagoda and an office of a UN-funded project were set on fire. A statue of Lord Buddha installed at the Banani Buddhist Monastery was damaged and another statue was looted.
